A common question before visiting South or Southeast Asia is ‘whether it’s safe?’. Countries like Thailand are full of adventure and ideal for safe, solo travel. Here’s more information!
Overview
Although there is a history of conflicts and unrest in Thailand, it is now largely a safe country to visit. In fact, it’s said to be the least dangerous country in the Southeast Asia region for solo travellers. However, do keep in mind that Thailand is still a developing country so taking precautions is always recommended.
COVID-19 in Thailand
Thailand has recently opened for tourism since COVID-19 pushed the world to close its borders. There are three programmes you can choose from, but these depend on two factors: your destination and vaccination status. If you’re staying at a hotel in Chiang Rai the likes Anantara Golden Triangle, they are likely to explain the procedure in more detail.
Watch out!
Although Thailand is quite a safe country, you may have to keep an eye out in public/crowded spaces. Petty theft, for instance, is common here, so keep your belongings in a secure place. Avoid loose purses or backpacks in crowded areas and invest in a fanny pack to secure your phone and cash.
Scams
Scams take place in most tourist destinations, especially when it comes to public transport. So be mindful of the prices when you opt to travel by taxis and tuk-tuks.
