Sri Lanka is blessed with a wide variety of wildlife that resides in the many nature parks and forests around the country. The Hurulu Eco Park in Habarana is one such park.
The Park
The Hurulu Forest Reserve was marked as a biosphere reserve in 1977 and is considered to be one of the most important reserves for Sri Lankan elephants. The Hurulu Eco Park is located within the forest reserve.
Location
The Hurulu Eco Park is located in Habarana, a short drive away from many hotels in Sigiriya and Habarana areas. Most accommodation properties in the area such as Cinnamon Lodge Habarana offer jeep safaris tours to Eco Park.
Elephants
Elephants are the most common animal that can be spotted at the Eco Park. Usually seen in herds near the water tanks, observe them at a distance and don’t interact with these wild beasts – as tempting as it should seem!
What not to do
Do keep in mind that the elephants spotted here are wild, and would not hesitate to charge or attack if they felt threatened. Some safari jeeps are known to torment the elephant herds, please be advised that this is extremely dangerous to both you and the animal. Ask your driver to back away and not take part in such behaviour if it occurs.
