The famous Huashan Mountain, often referred to as the Flower Mountain, is situated 120 km to the east of Xi’an and is a well-known tourist destination. It is also counted amongst the five sacred mountains for Taoists, as it features an array of venerated sites including pavilions, temples and engraved inscriptions.
Although the mountain is tranquil and picturesque, only daring hikers attempt the dangerous journey to the summit of the mountain. With its steep cliffs and deep ravines the mountain is equally renowned for its scenic beauty and its element of danger.
The mountain consists of five major peaks, each with its distinctive silhouette and majestic beauty. These are the Jade Maiden Peak, Cloud Terrace Peak, Lotus Peak, Sunrise Peak and Landing Wild Goose Peak. Cloud Terrace Peak, the least high summit is where hikers commence their journey here. There are three ways to ascend the mountain; you can take the cable car, travel the path below it, or take the 6 km winding pathway from the nearby Huashan village.
If you continue your journey you will reach Jade Maiden Peak, which is so-called as it is said that a celestial jade maiden was spotted riding a white steed in the vicinity. If you take a left turn to reach Sunrise Peak, you will have the opportunity to admire the early morning sunrise from this point. However to do so you must climb the mountain in the darkness, as there is no place for an overnight stay.
Many visitors choose to turn right instead and explore Lotus Peak. In fact the entire site derived its name from this summit which is said to resemble a lotus blossom in bloom. Visitors have the option of taking the gondola, crossing a deep valley to the highest summit of all, Landing Wild Goose Peak. The route to the summit is only for the very brave, but those who dare will be rewarded by panoramic views from the top of the mountain.
