Loy Krathong festival is one of the most important festivals in Thailand and is generally held in November, the 12th month of the Lunar Calendar.
Origin of the festival
There are several origin stories about the Loy Krathong festival but what is important is that it was initiated to celebrate the goddess of water and Lord Buddha.
Significance of the festival
The festivities are associated with water bodies, mainly rivers, and these are adorned with Krathongs. Staying at SAii Laguna Phuket or any other luxury hotel in Phuket will allow you to take part in these ethereal celebrations.
Making Krathongs
Krathongs are made to light up the rivers and they are made with natural material. All you need is a slice of the banana tree trunk, banana leaves, twigs, sticks, and flowers for decorations.
Celebrations
People will arrive at Nong Prajak in the evening with their Krathongs or purchase them from vendors in the area. A candle is lit with incense sticks on the Krathongs and they are kept in the water to float away.
