Housing six permanent galleries; the Children’s Discovery Gallery, the Chao Shao-an Gallery, the T.T. Tsui Gallery of Chinese Art, the Cantonese Opera Heritage Hall, the New Territories Heritage Hall and the Orientation Theatre, the compound of the museum has been built around a beautiful courtyard. In addition to the six permanent galleries, the museum also boasts six thematic galleries where exhibitions that showcase various treasures of the local heritage are held regularly.
Established in 2000, the museum seeks to reach out to the community to encourage the participation of the public in various activities including seminars and theatre programmes on art, history and culture. Guided tours are also offered, to make sure that you get to make the most of your visit. In addition to admiring the valuable artefacts on display here, you can stop by the museum shop or the café to savour a snack of drinks. Some of the special features one must not miss seeing include an exhibition which traces the development of Cantonese opera and a collection of Chinese paintings by Zhao Shao’an, an acclaimed artist. Committed to interpreting and preserving the cultural heritage of Hong Kong, the museum also highlights the region’s rich history with a collection categorized as Folk Art and Popular Culture artefacts, Performing Art Relics and Local History Relics.
