Early History
While there is no date marking the day the kayak was invented, the Inuit people have been commonly credited for having built them to travel across the Arctic 5,000 years ago.
A Recreational Activity
Kayaks were introduced as a recreational craft in the middle of the 19th century and came in the form of a vessel called, ‘Rob Roy”. Following the release of John MacGregor’s bestseller ” A Thousand Miles in the Rob Roy Canoe” in which he recounts his explorations through Europe on a series of cedar and oak decked canoes. Shortly after, kayaking became a popular pastime throughout Europe.
A Popular Sport
In the year 1873, John MacGregor introduced paddling as a competitive sport through a regatta. In 1924, the sport was demonstrated at the Eighth Olympiad in Paris. By 1936, it was integrated into the Olympics as a full medal sport.
