Even in this day and age China still remains a mystery that attracts thousands of travellers with the desire to unearth the mystery behind its speculation. China boasts one of the oldest continuous civilizations in the world and while much of its history is shrouded in time, that cannot discontinue people from enjoying what elusive little remains. From the Great Wall of China to the Forbidden City many of China’s historical landmarks are well known and are visited by tens of thousands each year. However, there are plenty of lesser known landmarks that receive very little tourist traffic.
Shenzhen is on the UNESCO list of Creative Cities and is a major economic hub. Shenzhen also has an extensive past and has been involved in many historically significant events- this was where both the Song and later the Ming Dynasty had their last stand as their power dwindled. One cannot visit the city without stopping by some of its famous landmarks.
One of Shenzhen’s most iconic landmarks is the Tomb of the Young Song Emperor. This is widely believed to be the final resting place of the last emperor of the Song Dynasty. The crypt is quite similar to the tombs used by the more prosperous citizens of that time, and has been restored to its original splendour by the Shenzhen City Government.
Another place worth of a visit is Xin’an or the Ancient City. The first town built on this site dates back to the fourth century, and while much of the area is covered in modern residential flats, Xin’an still retains the essence of the original settlement. The Ming Dynasty Wall and Gate located here have been excellently preserved and so has the Guan Yu Temple situated right outside the gate. Other popular historical spots include the Chiwan Left Fort, the Dawanshiju Hakka Fortified Village, the Dapeng Ancient Fort and the Crane Lake Fortified Hakka Village.
While the public transport in the city is quite good, tourists visiting Shenzhen can make getting about even easier by finding accommodation in a central location. The Somerset Garden City Shenzhen offers Shenzhen Serviced Residence right in the heart of the city. With several different styles to choose from, one can definitely find a Shenzhen Serviced Apartment to suit one’s needs.
