Malaysia is filled with hundreds of exotic locations that if time allows, you must visit; Langkawi Island is one of those places. Far from the noise and heat of the big cities, the natural landscape of Langkawi is more in tune with a lost tropical paradise, just waiting to be explored. Hiking amidst lush, green forests, mist covered hills and then cooling off under a mesmerizing waterfall is a great way to spend a day here.
For a truly memorable experience, stay over in one of the luxury Langkawi Resorts, like the The Datai Langkawi which is nestled amid the lush green foliage of an ancient rainforest, and make an early start in the morning. Do hire an experienced guide when heading out into the rainforest as those unfamiliar with the terrain can get easily lost here. Most of the hiking trails on the island take you through rainforests dense with foliage and massive trees that are over hundreds of years old
Some of the tress have formed canopy structures at the top that are now home to colourful wild birds, which you’ll see plenty of during your hike. In total, there are over 230 species of birds in Langkawi forests and over 400 different kinds of trees. If you head out early, you’ll spot many types of monkeys, giant squirrels, lemurs and even great hornbills moving through the forests.
There are several peaks here as well, the highest being “Gunung Raya: which affords some spectacular views over the island and some say, even Mainland Thailand and Malaysia. “Gunung Macincang” is the second highest peak and is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark. At a staggering 550 million years old, it is recognized as the country’s oldest rock formations. The hike here can be challenging but you won’t regret it when you see the stunning rock formations.
Langkawi also boasts unique limestone formations, mysterious caves with mesmerizing stalactites and stalagmite, labyrinths of mangrove water channels and much more. So if you are staying a little longer, it’s definitely worth exploring the island.
