The Habarana Eco park or the Hurulu Eco park is the least known national park in Habarana, as it is often shadowed by the better known national parks; Kaudulla and Minneriya. Located 3km away from Habarana town; Hurulu park is only a 5-minute drive, within arm’s reach of any Sri Lanka resort in Habarana such as Habarana Village by Cinnamon.
The national parks in Habarana including the Hurulu Eco Park are famous for the majestic Sri Lankan elephants. Go on a jeep safari to explore the wildlife grazing in their natural habitat and the unique eco system of Habarana. Jeep drivers are usually thorough with the areas of the park where the elephants can be spotted.
The Park comes under the Hurulu forest reserve and falls under the care of the forest department of Sri Lanka. This has a complete land extent of 10,000 hectares and the area open to visitors is only a 22km drive around.
The park comprises of 4 water ways made of tiny streams sprung up and collected together. Some of these water ways are directly connected to the Hurulu wewa. It is also significant that most of the biodiversity of the park are sustained around the water ways, this in fact gave it, its name.
The park is home to a great deal of elephants you might encounter on your trip if you are lucky, in small herds. Elephants in the Hurulu park are quite aggressive so try not to make unwarranted noises or act in a manner you would possibly provoke them.
The park is filled with tropical lush green, including teak plantation in certain parts. This is also a perfect bird watching spot as exclusive bird species such as the Pompadour Green pigeon and the Crested Serpent eagle can be found in abundance the park.
