Fondly known as ‘Little England’ – Nuwara Eliya is a quaint little town in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Its cold weather and colonial-style buildings have contributed to this nickname, and if you are ever in this city, here is a small guide to help you.
Best time to visit
Due to its location, rainfall is expected almost everyday in this town. However, the best months to visit would be February and March. A month that should be avoided is April as it can get quite busy with locals who love visiting to get away from the hot climate prevailing in other parts of the island during this time.
Take a boat ride on Gregory Lake
Looking forward to a romantic evening with your loved one? Spend time at the Gregory Lake and enjoy some lovely couples activities. Located close to many top hotels in Nuwara Eliya, such as the Galway Heights Hotel, Gregory Lake has many activities such as paddle-boating, jet skiing, and even horse riding that you can try out.
Hike the Horton Plains
If you love being surrounded by nature, then try hiking in the Horton Plains. One of the most popular places to visit while in Nuwara Eliya, the Horton Plains hike is not that hard and can even be done by the little ones. Check out the world’s end viewpoint and connect with nature as you pass the famous Baker Falls and other rare fauna and flora whilst on your hike.
Visit tea plantations
The most famous place for growing tea in Sri Lanka is Nuwara Eliya. Take a stroll through one of the many large tea plantations and revel in the lush greenery as you are enveloped by the cool breeze. Truly a serene experience and a must-try when here. You may also enjoy a warm cup of pure Ceylon tea on your tour of the tea plantation too!
