Tangalle is where you should go if the high-flying party and surf gigs at popular Sri Lankan beaches like Arugam Bay or Mirissa are not your cup of tea. Tangalle’s beaches are quiet as they aren’t as popular among tourists.
How to Get to Tangalle
It is quite easy to get to Tangalle regardless of which direction you are coming from. Driving to Tangalle from Colombo would take a maximum of 4 hours on the E1 Matara Expressway. You can also take the train or come by bus from Mirissa.
Best Beaches
Tangalle is famous for two iconic beaches; Goyambokka beach and Silent beach. They are both wide with cornflower blue sea before them. The Goyambokka Beach is bedecked in rocky outcrops and is easily accessible. There are some restaurants nearby as well as a few eateries on the beach where you can spend the day lazing about. The water here is a bit rough so its best to ask around before going for a dip. It is also a great beach to watch the sunrise.
Silent Beach, on the other hand, is also known as Amanwella Beach. It takes a little work getting to it but it completely worth it for the gorgeous white sands and blue ocean. The beach lives up to its moniker and is often quiet and secluded. The sea is quite rough, so discretion is advised before going into the water.
Staying in Tangalle
There is a wide variety of accommodation available in Tangalle from rooms, homestays and Airbnbs, to the iconic Sri Lanka luxury resorts. You can have your pick, though staying at the nearby Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort will put you in close quarters to both Goyambokka and Silent Beach, both of which is a 5-minute drive away.
