Originating from the Aldabra Atoll islands in Seychelles, these are one of the largest tortoise types in all of the world right now.
About the Aldabra giant tortoises
According to history, these mighty creatures were found on many islands located in the same area, the fossil found is proof that this type of tortoise was once found on every continent on earth except Antartica and Australia.
Over the years
The species of giant tortoises found in the Indian Ocean were forced to be extinct for good because of sailors from Europe. By the year 1840, they were all gone, except for the ones in Seychelles.
Visiting the tortoises
Seychelles has about 150,000 of these animals and once you get approval from the Seychelles Islands Foundation, you can commence your trip. Many Seychelles hotels would help you with the information needed to get the approval and if you are at Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort & Casino, for instance, the Aldabra Atoll would be about a day trip away.
What to expect
The number of people who are allowed to enter and visit these endangered species is limited, thus you might not get approved for the tour on your first attempt. A few other islands also have some enclosures if that happens, and you can visit them.
