Built to commemorate independence from colonial rule, Independence Square is one of the must-see historical tokens in Sri Lanka. Located in Torrington Square, this is where you find the Independence Memorial Museum. The monument was constructed at the spot where the first parliament was opened by the Duke of Gloucester, Prince Harry.
Architecture
The amazing architecture of the monument is one of the main draws for tourists. The place resembles Magul Maduwa found in Kandy – another majestic building in Sri Lanka. Also, inside the hall are several paintings depicting the history and culture of the island.
Purpose
The purpose of the monument is to provide both locals and tourists with a symbol so that they can appreciate the hard-fought independence of the country. The square is under the administration of the Cultural Ministry.
Seating
Independence Square can accommodate the 224 members of the parliament. The open area right outside the hall can seat about 25,000 people, while the ground is spacious enough for 100,000 people.
