Well known as the ‘father of Asian architecture’, Sri Lanka’s iconic architect Geoffrey Bawa is known the world over for his incredible architectural design. His legacy still remains across the island.
Who is Geoffrey Bawa?
The renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa was considered to rank amongst the most eminent stylists in his field. Many of his creations have been acclaimed as works of genius comparable with the finest works of architects from around the globe. He is considered to be the principal force behind “tropical modernism”.
Best of his work
Some of his best work includes the Sri Lankan Parliament in Kotte (1982) and the beautiful Seema Malaka which is a Buddhist ordination temple situated on an island in the middle of Colombo’s Beira Lake. Moreover, a popular Sigiriya hotel located in the Cultural Triangle known as Heritance Kandalama is an incredible architectural masterpiece designed by Bawa in 1994. The Ruhuna University is a magnificent creation by Bawa for the younger generation of Sri Lanka.
Bawa architecture
Geoffrey Bawa always had a soft spot for the country’s varied natural scenes and landscapes. So, he made those natural surroundings as his main focal points to build eye-catching buildings. A striking element in Bawa’s work is that he often appreciates nature’s natural elements like ocean breeze, tropical su, and lush foliage.
Dream Home Now a Top Attraction!
While he was in Italy, Geoffrey Bawa dreamed of buying a villa and settling down to enjoy the quiet life. However, since that did not happen, he returned to Sri Lanka in 1948 and bought a deserted rubber estate in Lunuganga where he created a spectacular country home with an Italian garden.
