Victoria Peak, which also goes by the name of Mount Austin is a mountain in Hong Kong Island’s western half. Local residents usually shorten its name to ‘The Peak’. This is the tallest mountain on the island and boasts an elevation of over five hundred metres. While the general public is not allowed access to the summit of Mount Austin, as it is the location of a telecom outfit, the surrounding regions are open for access and contain many parks. This area is also a residential one, and has a very high land value.
One of Hong Kong Island’s most popular sightseeing attractions, Victoria Peak provides a picture perfect opportunity to capture beautiful snapshots of the harbor and other parts of the island, as well as of neighbouring islands. The Peak as it is called, sees an excess of over seven million tourists annually.
If you’re residing in hotel apartments in Hong Kong such as the Citadines Habourview Hong Kong, just hail a cab and you can get to Mount Austin in under half an hour via Peak Road. You can also opt to take public transport to get here. If you decide to use the MTR, Central is the closest station to this attraction.
Once you get to the top, you’ll find that there is a viewing deck which has telescopes which you can use to observe the sights all around and below you. Make sure to have some pocket change on you though, as the telescopes aren’t free and need to be fed coins in order to let you use them. The shopaholics out there will be pleased to know that there a few shopping malls on Victoria Peak. These house several eateries which cater to hungry tourists and locals alike.
