Fishing in Mackay is a completely different experience. Not only is there a great variety of fish, but the diverse locations for fishing, all reachable in less than one hour from any given location, makes it a paradise for the keen fisherman. Whatever the hotel in Mackay you are staying at, you will have the opportunity fish in the reef, on the headland, in a stream in a rainforest, and of course the beach.
A good place to start your fishing expedition is at Kinchant Dam. It has a high density of barramundi, which means it is almost guaranteed that you will have caught a “big one” if you have enough patience. If you are into fly fishing or would like to try it, you can head over to Prospect Creek. The prospects at Prospect Creek is indeed high, as it is a favourite place for sooty grunter and Saratoga to hang out. A good blend of both the worlds, sooty grunter and some big game, is Cattle Creek. It is located close to Finch Hatton and has some interesting holes that are favoured by the bigger fish. Sandy Creek, located less than half an hour from Oaks Rivermarque, is special. If you are skilled enough, you will be able to catch some mud crabs for a steaming pot of crab stew for dinner. Sandy Creek is also known for its barramundi and the salmon. Constants Creek is a place that is constantly visited by the locals as it has plenty of mangrove jack, barramundi, and fingermark. It is quite popular for a quick fishing trip, and if the luck is on your side, you might be able to snag a salmon or two at Constants Creek as well.
While these are the spots to catch your common species of fish, talking to a local fisherman or having a keen fisherman take you around Mackay can yield surprising results.
