Located North of Sri Lanka’s capital, Negombo has been one of the oldest tourist hubs in the island. The coastal town has a strong influence of its previous colonisers – The Dutch and the Portuguese. They have also left the town behind with many churches which have earned it the title “Little Rome” among locals. The livelihood of the majority of the population is fishing as Negombo is blessed with both the sea and the lagoon. Hence the town has it’s own fishing harbour. Negombo fishery harbour is one among the three found on the West Coast of the island.
The town is home to a large number of hotels and resorts, not just the beach resorts but there are also the ones that practice Ayurveda in Sri Lanka. Resorts often have an in-house spa that offers such services and practices. One such resort that is close proximity to the popular fishing harbour and one that organises tours as well is Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions. Visiting the harbour will allow one to gain a first-hand experience of how trading takes place. Fishermen trade their catch for a price, there are also auctions sometimes. The fish market is also in close proximity to the harbour. Visiting these places is a great way to learn about the daily lives of the local community.
Among the other interesting things to do in Negombo are to take a catamaran ride on the lagoon. This will take you through the interiors of the town and is a great way to explore the ecosystem around here. A visit to one of the famous churches will give you a chance to experience the colonial architecture that was prevalent in the town. The Dutch fort is also worth a quick visit when in Negombo.
