Head to Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand where the dramatic landscape of high mountain ranges, a deep glacial lake and swift running streams make the area suitable for all kinds of year round activities. Lake Wakatipu the shores on which Queenstown is located has turned out to be one of the most popular fishing destinations in the world no doubt because of the combination of pristine wilderness, the Alpine scenery and of course the best trout fishing opportunities. The lake has 124 miles of coast line and is 52 miles long affording many secluded fishing areas for anglers. It is the second deepest lake in New Zealand and is well stocked with brown and rainbow trout. Six major rivers run into the lake and these are important fisheries as well.
The most common locations for boat and shore fishing are sections near Kinloch and Glenorchy and Frankton Arm. Rainbow trout is found in the deeper parts of the lake and can weigh up to 5 kg. Brown trout is usually around 2-3 kg. Towards the end of winter they collect around stream mouths before going upriver. Salmon found in the lake and streams are small and weigh around 1 kg. However some really large whoppers are caught each season and visitors can see these at Queenstown’s Kawarau jet pier.
Due to the rugged nature of the land, the east area of the lake is easily accessible by road. The western part can be accessed by a boat and a helicopter is required to access the mountain streams. Fishermen and women can take in some of the most stunning scenery in the world while casting their fishing line in crystal clear waters.
Learn the Wakatipu drift fishing technique. Other fishing methods include, spinning, fly fishing and trolling, using a lead-line or downrigger. Spinning with lightweight tackle or trolling around the edges of the lake is used mainly for brown trout while rainbow or landlocked Chinook salmon is also caught this way. The fishing season runs through the beginning of October to the end of April. At higher elevations the season runs from November to end of May.
A freshwater fishing license is required to fish in the inland waters near Queenstown. The city is well equipped to deal with the fishing enthusiasts who flock there from all over the world. Fishing tackle, waders, clothing and all equipment can easily be hired and there are plenty of guided fly fishing safaris that provide access to unique wilderness sites by four wheel drive, boat or helicopter.
