Sinhala and Tamil New Year
If you really want to get a taste of the local culture, the best time to come would be in April when its time for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year which usually takes place in the second week of the month. But be warned that most of the shops and places to see will be closed and transport will be at a minimum.
Maha Shivarathri
This is a festival celebrated by the Hindu community here. It is in honour of God Shiva, therefore, many Hindu temples dedicated to this god will celebrate by bathing the statues in milk and honey and red vermillion. This symbolises the purification of the soul.
Vesak Poya
Vesak falls on the month of May and is the celebration of the birth, death and enlightenment of Lord Buddha. This is celebrated on a grand scale in Colombo. Every house, shop or office along the main road are decked with paper lanterns that are well lit up at night.
Christmas
