There are many tales of lost cities and disappeared continents in popular historical lore, and one of the most popular of this is the city of Ubar, which has been referred to in a variety of works.
The Legendary Lost City
Iram of the Pillars, also known as Ubar, was largely believed to be a fabled city that was the heart of the frankincense trade millennia ago. It was referenced in works of literature by famous authors such as HP Lovecraft, and in bestselling video games such as Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
Atlantis of the Sands
This term was coined by famous explorer, Lawrence of Arabia since it was believed that the city’s rulers became so wicked and evil as a result of their immense power that God brought about the destruction of the city.
Discovery
The city was discovered sometime around 1992, and its remains lie in the area of modern Dhofar, which features the metropolis of Salalah, where the Sultan of Oman is from. Some remains, such as that of the old fort of Shisr are still easily visible.
Scepticism
Some believe that these remains might not necessarily belong to the fabled city of Ubar, but to another settlement that would’ve existed far more recently since Atlantis of the Sands was believed to have thrived 3000 years before the birth of Christ. If you’re vacationing at one of many Salalah beach villas situated around the area, such as Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara, you can investigate for yourself.
