A free-roaming nature reserve where animals enjoy freedom and protection, the Arabian Wildlife Park is a definite must visit for wildlife enthusiasts heading to the UAE. Here’s what you need to know.
Where It Can Be Found
The Arabian Wildlife Park is located on Sir Bani Yas Island, off the coast of Abu Dhabi; in fact, the park covers over half the island! Those looking for a resort in Abu Dhabi on the island itself have a few options available including the likes of Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Yamm Villa Resort.
A Bit of History
The reserve was established in the 1970s under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the former President of the UAE. His vision was to create a sanctuary for wildlife and in particular animals in the region that were endangered or facing extinction.
Exotic Wildlife
The Arabian Wildlife Park is home to over 10,000 animals that roam freely within the reserve’s vast enclosures. Once facing near extinction, the Arabian Oryx thrives here now and is one of the park’s success stories. Mountain gazelles, sand gazelles, cheetahs, giraffes, striped hyenas and ostriches are amongst the other wildlife one can see at the reserve.
Exploring the Park
Taking a guided wildlife drive in a 4×4 vehicle is one of the best ways to observe the animals here. However, you also have the option of going on guided nature walks or even mountain bike tours at certain sections of the park, which provide a more up close experience.
