The third-largest city in Northeastern Thailand (Isan), Khon Kaen is also one of the most developed. Isan, which is the largest, most populous, and most rural part of the country and also the least visited by visitors, contains 20 provinces and more than 22 million residents. Here are some interesting places you can visit while you’re here.
A little bit about the city
For those travelling to central or southern Laos by land, those taking a route through Isan, and residents of Thailand who have already visited the country and are looking for a place that isn’t a tourist hotspot, Khon Kaen may be a good choice of destination. However, it is not advised for those making their first trip to Thailand.
Where to stay
While many of the hotels in Khon Kaen are only moderately acceptable, there are plenty of excellent hotels at all price levels. The hotels are primarily targeted at domestic tourists. You can find great accommodation options that are luxurious and elegant such as the Avani Khon Kaen Hotel & Convention Center which offers excellent spaces for your events and meetings as well.
What to see
Visit the nearby temples and shrines and Bueng Kaen Nakhon Lake first thing in the morning. After exploring the lake, proceed to the Ubol Ratana Dam for lunch and some local recreation in the Bang Saen Beach neighbourhood. Visit the vibrant Ton Taan Night Market, browse among the neighbourhood stores, eat some mouthwatering Thai street food, and take in the laid-back ambience while listening to some Thai live music for the ideal way to conclude the day in Khon Kaen.
