The Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park commonly known as the Jozani Forest is the only national park on the beautiful island of Zanzibar. The forest reserve doesn’t cover more than 50km2 but there are so many cool things to see here.
Where is Jozani Forest?
This park is located in the southeast of the island so it is easily reached by tourists residing in many a Zanzibar beach resort. The southern entrance of the park includes a 1km boardwalk and this park is a source of hunting, farming, and wood for the residents of the nearby Jozani Village.
Flora and Fauna
If you’re an avid birdwatcher, Jozani is a paradise. This park is home to more than 100 species of birds. You’ll spot coucals, pigeons, doves, lapwings, sandpipers and many more beautiful birds among the trees. There are over 50 species of butterflies here too.
Things to do
If you’re staying at a luxury resort nearby such as The Residence Zanzibar, you can easily come here for a change in scenery as they offer amazing excursions to the park. Guided walks are the best for guests who want to gain insightful knowledge about the park’s many animals and trees. Even if you’re with such a resort, make sure you hire a guide to accompany you as tourists aren’t allowed to walk the trails alone.
