A major tourist attraction, the Merlion Park is widely considered to be the personification of the Singaporean spirit and is located in the central business district.
Global Recognition:
Location in the economic heart of Singapore, the Merlion Park holds the Merlion statue that is considered by many to be the mascot of the country due to its global popularity. Given its popularity, there are many a hotel near Merlion Park to meet the demand!
History:
Initially built in 1964, the park was later relocated to the side of The Esplanade Bridge for better viewing. The move which cost around 7 million US Dollars was completed in 2002 and the opening was done with then minister Lee Kuan Yew.
What is the Merlion?
A hybrid and mythical creature, it is believed that the fish section is representative of the country’s initial state as a fishing village and the lion is a nod to the Malay origins of the name “Singapore”.
