The dynamic metropolis of Colombo, Sri Lanka offers much to experience for travellers; if you have just 36 hours (hopefully more!) to explore the city, here are some must-visit sites.
Gangaramaya Temple
For cultural insights, the Gangaramaya Temple close to Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo is well worth a visit. Within the complex, you will find various statues of Lord Buddha, a sacred Bodhi tree, an art gallery and a museum; you can also head to the nearby Seema Malakaya, a small temple built above the waters of Beira Lake.
Pettah
Those staying at hotels in Colombo City should also set aside time to explore Pettah; think of it as a locale that’s one big outdoor bazaar! As you wander the streets and narrow lanes you will find shops, stalls and pavement vendors offering clothing, sarees, bags, shoes, jewellery, electronics, toys, produce and more.
Galle Face Green
Galle Face Green lies beside the shoreline, providing an ideal vantage point to catch magical sunsets. It’s a popular spot for flying kites, relaxing and sampling some of the best street food in Colombo. There are promenade and boardwalk areas for you to stroll along, while the Galle Face Urban Forest Park is a new addition here.
Colombo National Museum
For more on the county’s rich heritage, head to the Colombo National Museum housed within an impressive colonial building. Inside, one will find fascinating exhibits be it statues, carvings, weapons, art, jewellery, demon masks, palm leaf manuscripts or a royal throne; in a sperate building, there’s a natural history collection too.
