Cambodia is known for its rich cultural heritage and ancient ruins, and there is no better place to experience this than in the magnificent stone city of Angkor. This UNESCO World Heritage site is in the northwestern province of Siem Reap and boasts some of the most awe-inspiring and well-preserved temples on the planet.
Angkor Wat
This temple complex is the largest religious monument in the world and is often referred to as the crown jewel of Khmer architecture. The iconic image of Angkor Wat’s central spires rising above the surrounding jungle is a must-see sight for any visitor to Cambodia. The attraction is just a 17-minute drive away from Anantara Angkor Resort.
Bayon
Located in the heart of Angkor Thom, Bayon is famous for its gigantic stone faces that ornament the temple’s towers. The intricate carvings and sculptures portraying daily life and mythology are a wonder to behold. You’ll find that even the interior designs of many a boutique hotel in Siem Reap are also inspired by some of these pieces of ancient art.
Ta Prohm
This temple is a unique blend of nature and architecture, with giant trees growing out of the ruins and their roots entwining the stones. Made famous by the film Tomb Raider, Ta Prohm is a hauntingly beautiful site that is not to be missed.
Banteay Srei
This temple may be small, but it is known for its intricate carvings and vibrant colours. Built almost entirely of pink sandstone, Banteay Srei is often referred to as the “jewel of Khmer art” and is a stunning example of the Khmer Empire’s artistic and architectural prowess.
