The Maldives is surely a great destination with a good blend of several cultures and traditions. This is quite evident in their music as well. Bodu Beru, their drumbeats are surely a must0grab experience when in the Maldives.
Bodu Beru – the meaning
Bodu means Big and Beru means drums in the local languages. So, doesn’t that sum that all up? These beats will sound like those you hear from East Africa but will have a slight difference.
The performance
The performance happens fascinatingly. It involves 5-7 men generally, and the seat on the floor facing each other, when the drum master locates himself in the middle.
The beat
The performance starts on a slow beat with a mellow tempo. This gradually increases until a very rapid beat gets created. It’s amazing to watch how the dancers increase the pace of their moves to the increasing beat.
Where can you experience this?
Everywhere in the Maldives! Many Maldives villas the likes of Kuramathi Maldives offer Bodu Beru entertainment to their guests at night. Needless to say, Bodu Beru beats add colour to every Maldivian festival as well.
