An unperturbed haven for flora and fauna where the sun peeps through its lush greenery; the Sinharaja Rainforest is a must-visit place for the adventurous traveller. A hotspot for biodiversity, the rainforest is located in South Western Sri Lanka and spans 21 kilometres of terrain from east to west and about 7 kilometres from north to south. The vegetation here is quite dense and offers very rare yet exotic glimpses of wildlife that dot the area.
Sinharaja is a favourite among local and foreign tourists which offers great treks through the park. While hotels near Sinharaja Rainforest are aplenty, you may choose to stay at either upscale or eco-friendly escapes like The Rainforest Ecolodge, Sinharaja.
Home to over 50% of endemic varieties of fauna in Sri Lanka, the rainforest was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. Birds here are of 282 types out of a recorded 384 varieties in the country. It is also home to the three peaks; Sinhagala, Pinipitigala and Mulawella. An interesting legend that revolves around Sinharaja is that of a story of a lion that lived in the forest and was believed to have had a union with a local princess. Although the tale is only but a product of myth and folklore, it still remains a much read and enacted story in local theatre.
Among the mammals that circulate the reserve, elephants have been of particular interest even though they are not seen as often as those in other wetland parks. Sri Lanka’s famous leopard can be found within the rainforest while other endemic species like the fishing cat, barking deer, mouse deer and rusty spotted cat also inhabit the area. The habitats of the rainforest are so wildlife-friendly that flora and fauna live beside one another in much harmony.
The best time to visit the rainforest is between the months of August and September when it’s the dry season. This is the best time to avoid most leech attacks which are a common occurrence on visits. The Sinharaja Rainforest is considered by many as one of the greatest natural gifts of nature and is ready to welcome you always.
