As one of the most daring engineering projects ever undertaken, Palm Jumeirah is shaped like a date palm, as per the name. Here are some mind-blowing facts for your information.
A manmade Island
A dream come true for the prime minister and rule od Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as he first revealed the vision of a manmade island in the 1990s. The property developed known as ‘Nakheel Partners’ turned that dream into a reality. The design of this project – the palm shape, is what dictated every step of this man-made project.
Satellites were used
Creating the perfect shape of a palm called for very high levels of precision, and this was done by using hi-tech GPS and the dredgers worked around the clock. Vibro-compaction technology was used to prepare the land to be built on. The finished area is equivalent to 600 football fields!
Six years to be built
The cost of the project was a whopping $12 billion and began in the year 2001. After 6 years, the first residents moved in. As of today, the islands are home to 6000 apartments, 1500 beachfront mansions and many a Palm Jumeirah hotel, the likes of Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort.
