History
Bentota’s heritage goes back far into ancient history, since the land has been mentioned in ancient poems written millennia ago known as sandesa kavya. It is believed that a demon named ‘Bem’ lived along its banks. The town’s name is actually based on that demon.

Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery
Sri Lanka is home to five of the seven species of sea turtle in existence, all of which are endangered. By visiting this hatchery you can learn a great deal about these majestic creatures, interact with several of them, and if you’re lucky you can even introduce baby turtles into the sea.
