Midigama is a sleepy hamlet in the Southern coast of Sri Lanka and is a favourite among tourists who want to enjoy the laidback beach vibe and get away from the crowded beaches along the island’s shoreline in the South. The area is well known amongst tourists for two reasons; firstly, for good surfing which has helped to make Sri Lanka one of the topmost surf spots in the world, and secondly, for the picture postcard view of traditional stilt fishermen who can be spotted in the mornings and afternoons. Photographing or even just watching these fishermen sit on their stilts patiently waiting for fish to eat their bait is a unique sight in Sri Lanka.
The best period for surfing in Midigama commences around November and comes to a close in April. During these months the average water temperature is around 28 degrees Celsius, while the average air temperature is approximately 30 degrees Celsius. Considered a surfer’s paradise, Midigama with its strong left break is a perfect place to surf for beginners and good for long-boarding as well.
In addition to surfing and watching stilt fishermen, another touristy activity is taking boat rides on Kogalla Lake that has around 100 islets which are home to a wide variety of birds. A quiet boat ride along the lake is a relaxing way to unwind. The historic Galle Fort in Galle is a key attraction to any tourist visiting Sri Lanka. If you are interested in local literature, there is also the Martin Wickramasinghe Museum of Folk, Art & Culture. A few more places close to Midigama that a traveller can explore are Mirissa, which is famous for whale watching and Weligama to experience a typical fishing village. There are also a number of turtle hatcheries along the south western coast.
Home to several fascinating attractions, Midigama lets the vacationer relax and explore the quiet seaside atmosphere while staying at a hotel in Galle. Some of the nicest Sri Lanka hotels along the beach such as Era Beach can be found in this area and it allows visitors to enjoy a one of a kind coastal holiday while experiencing true Sri Lankan hospitality.
