Where Is It?
This lake can be found in the village of Kandalama in the Matale District, within easy reach of the iconic Sigiriya; attractions like the Dambulla Cave Temple are also just a short drive away. The best way to enjoy sightseeing here is to stay at ‘Safe & Secure’ certified eco-hotels like Heritance Kandalama overlooking the lake itself.
An Artificial Creation
Interestingly, the lake is not a natural one and was created as a result of a reservoir being built for the Kandalama Dam across the Mirisgoni Oya (river). The reservoir is around 1,600 metres wide and reaches a height of approximately 21 metres; its main purpose was to provide water for irrigation in the region.
A Scenic Backdrop
Today, the lake offers a setting of inspiring beauty in which to enjoy relaxation and recreation especially for those staying at a hotel by the waterfront. Ideal for families and couples alike, the lake environs are perfect for a quiet stroll or boat ride. It also provides a lovely backdrop for dining under the stars amidst cool breezes.
Birdwatching
Amongst the best things to do at Kandalama Lake is to enjoy birdwatching with around 233 resident species being recorded here. Stay at a hotel that offers walks or boat rides with a resident naturalist early in the morning; you will learn to identify the different bird calls and spot some of these species like majestic Brahminy kites.
