When it comes to nature and wild-life, there are great spectacles that occur as a result of migration, when vast herds of animals embark on a unified quest in hopes of finding a better food-source or a solace from the coming of unfavourable seasons. The tropical island paradise of Sri Lanka has her own such phenomenon, and what makes it truly incredible, is that it involves Elephants.
The recently recognised event which is now referred to as ‘The Gathering’, occurs in Minneriya National Park, located a short distance from any Sigiriya Hotel and even the interesting locality of Habarana which offers establishments such as the Habarana Village by Cinnamon. Ensuring that there is no shortage of places to stay in the nearby region if one intends to witness the incredible march of the majestic Elephants.
The Gathering of the Elephants takes place every year around the months of July to October, and occurs as a result of the droughts that happen during that time. When the waters recede around the Minneriya reservoir, beds of grass begin to grow, and the Elephants rush to these sites to feast upon the grass as it presents to them a much needed food source.
The march of the Elephants has been happening for over hundreds of years but has only been very recently been recognised for the marvellous phenomenon that it is. Unfortunately, it’s beginning to look like the ‘The Gathering’ might not be happening for much longer since there are plans to retain the Minneriya waters during the dry seasons. Should this occur, the grass that attracts the Elephant visitors will vanish, along with the march.
So if you’re keen on witnessing this grand spectacle, your window might be closing, so make sure you seize the closest chance you get and high-tail it to the island paradise of Sri Lanka.
