At the Wasgamuwa National Park which is about an hour’s drive from Cinnamon Lodge Habarana, you can enrol in a charity that aids the conservation of elephants by monitoring them with the aid of volunteers.
An Elephant Conservation Holiday
Volunteers will be aiding elephant conservation and making a difference in Sri Lanka while also on holiday. There are many tasks that volunteers must carry out during the day from monitoring the animals, assessing the presence of elephants in the jungle, doing a lot of data gathering and taking photographs that will help to identify and work towards a safer environment for elephants.
Accommodation and Food
If you are not staying in a Habarana hotel, you can stay at a small mountain house with shared rooms. All the meals are provided with including vegan meals for vegetarians.
Day-to-Day Experiences
From your arrival in Colombo, the charity can put you up at a hotel for the night and take you up to Wasgamuwa National Park the next morning. By Day 3 you will get the complete orientation package before you begin volunteer work that will take place across two weeks.
Responsible Tourism
The Responsible Tourism project focuses on ensuring that tourists bring more than just revenue to a community when they come on holiday and don’t leave behind a negative impact. Responsible tourism puts local community needs, cultural sensitivity and protecting the environment.
