Rekawa Beach
Rekawa Beach is a secluded and serene stretch of coastline that’s home to one of the island’s most important nesting sites for sea turtles. Located just 14 km from Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, this beach sees the arrival of five species of turtles from April to September every year including rare leatherback and hawksbill turtles. You can join patrols on the beach with turtle-watching volunteers to help protect the turtles and their eggs and may even spot baby turtles bravely heading to the ocean!
Tangalle City
To experience some local culture, you can embark on a guided tour by tuk-tuk of the city of Tangalle; restaurants serving delicious local cuisine, bustling markets with aromatic and colourful spices and sacred temples are just some of the highlights here. You can also visit the Tangalle Fish Market and see local fishermen bringing in their daily catch to be sold. Some resorts will even give you the chance to make curd or pottery for a truly authentic Sri Lankan experience.
Hummanaya Blowhole
No trip here would be complete without a visit to the Hummanaya Blowhole which happens to be the second-largest blowhole in the world! Located only around 20 minutes from Tangalle, it’s a natural wonder which has a distinct sound which can be heard even before you reach the site. This incredible phenomenon occurs when seawater is forced through a small opening in the rocks, creating a massive spout of water that can reach heights of up to 30 meters. Make sure to visit during high tide for the best views.
Mulkirigala Rock Temple
An ancient Buddhist temple, Mulkirigala Rock Temple is perched on top of a towering rock formation that’s around 210 metres high. An ideal place to visit on an excursion from Tangalle, this attraction can be reached after ascending around 500 steps to the top; your exertions will be rewarded with the chance to explore a sacred site where you will find caves with various statues and painted murals; equally captivating are the stunning views of the surroundings from this inspiring vantage point.
