Dondra is Sri Lanka’s southernmost point. Locally known as ‘Devundara’, the quiet fishing village has a great cultural and historical significance despite having a rather insignificant commercial impact. Today, the lovely coastal town of Dondra presents a holiday-perfect, relaxing atmosphere which is completely opposite to its neighbour, the city of Matara. Located within easy reach from hotels in Weligama such as the We Escape, and other major southern coast destinations such as Mirissa, Dondra is a great destination to enjoy the beach and some truly spectacular views.
Aside from the stunning coastline, Dondra is home to several other interesting attractions. One of the most beloved attractions in this city is the Dondra Lighthouse. Maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the lighthouse and its beautiful premises which include a perfectly manicured coconut grove are open to the public. However, visitors require special permission to climb to the top which features a stunning 360 degree view from a guarded deck. Since the coastal town is located close to a major shipping lane, the lighthouse serves as a marker for more than 250 ships that take the route. The lighthouse is also used as a surveillance point by the Navy and located close to a dolphin and whale migratory path. Another popular attraction in Dondra is the ruins of the Tondeswaram Temple at Devundara Devalaya. Tondeswaram Temple was one of the five temples in Sri Lanka which was dedicated to the God Shiva. Although the temple was destroyed during the 16th century, the ruins of the fascinating temple complex are definitely worth a visit. According to historical documents, Tondeswaram Temple was visited by Ibn Batuta in the 14th century. Devundara Devalaya, built during the British reign, is dedicated to God Visnu.
Fishing is the most prominent industry in Dondra and the primary occupation of its residents. The quiet town is not much of a major tourist destination or a ‘must-visit’ location along the southern coast. However, Dondra, is definitely worth a visit for those who wish to bask in the calm and quiet atmosphere and to explore the locals’ authentic way of life.
