Maldives is a popular diving destination and one of the key diving sites in the island is the Maldive Victory Wreck. The cargo ship sank in 1981 in the North Male atoll. Built in the 1970’s, the ship was over 100 meters long and 13 meters wide. The cargo ship is now empty of the goods that it transported in 1981 except for a few hardened cement bags. Soon after the ship sank, divers in Male found an interest in diving in and around the wrecked area. The wreck lies on the west side of the airport island and at present the ship is adorned with beautiful coral growth and it is home to many animal species.
Large schools of fish and different types of coral sponges are spotted on the wreck of the Maldive Victory. It is not one of the easiest dives to make, but it is well worth the time and energy spent. The dive is considered to be quite challenging because the wreck is situated in a part of the sea that has regular currents and strong waves. You could swim into the holes and the wheel house of the ship and take a look at the growth of corals inside. Novice divers may need help from instructors to navigate the breath of the ship, since the water here is quite deep and also because the sea is rough. The stern, bridge area and the cabin area are locations that you should explore when diving at this site. Make sure you dive on a day when the see is not that rough, it is not easy to explore the wreck if the currents are too strong.
The Maldive Victory is a beautiful diving site and is recognized as one of the best diving spots that divers should see. There are a number of hotels around the area which provide comfortable lodgings during your stay in Maldives. There is many a Maldives resort that you could take a look at before deciding on a place to stay. If you are interested in diving in particular then look for accommodation in Maldives that is closest to the atolls you are interested in diving to. Check out Anantara Dhigu Maldives as it offers some great diving packages and lessons and includes comfortable rooms, fine dining and luxurious facilities.
