A UNESCO World Heritage Site, enchanting Luang Prabang in Laos is home to many captivating temples including Wat Manorom which is well worth adding to your itinerary.
Getting There
This temple is in the south of the city outside the ancient walls. Those staying at properties such as Avani+ Luang Prabang which is within this World Heritage Site will find that Wat Manorom is only around a 10 to 15-minute walk away. Alternatively, you can get there by tuk-tuk or rent a motorbike or bicycle, the latter being an ideal option for eco-friendly sightseeing.
A Bit of History
It’s always best to get an idea of the temple’s history before visiting it from your hotel. Luang Prabang has a rich religious heritage which includes the creation of this site. Many believe it dates to the 14th century, though some dispute the date. However, none of its original parts can be seen; this is because it was damaged or destroyed several times through the centuries and the current structure dates to the early 1970s.
Key Highlights
Amongst the most notable attractions here is the wonderful ordination hall or “sim” which is one of the tallest of its kind in the city. You will find that the main door is ornate and has beautiful decorations and gold relief, while the exterior walls are painted red and gold. Visitors will be able to see the life of the Buddha depicted in various paintings as well, while a bronze Buddha statue measuring around six metres in height is another notable highlight.
Propper Attire
Keep in mind that this is a religious site and as at other temples in Thailand, one should dress appropriately; this means that attire should cover bare shoulders, legs, and midriffs for both men and women. As a sign of respect, also ensure to remove your hat / cap, footwear, and sunglasses as well and do not disturb the tranquil environment by making too much noise.
