Abu Dhabi is being aggressively promoted as a catalyst for culture and as such several art events are organised annually under the aegis of government organisations for gallery owners, artists, collectors and art lovers to come together, acquire new works and exchange ideas. The Abu Dhabi government is also encouraging world renowned galleries to set up facilities in the city to give an impetus to the industry in the region.
Under this scenario private galleries opened in the city although few survived. Ghaf was the first independent contemporary art gallery to open in Abu Dhabi whose aim is to be part of the burgeoning art scene of Abu Dhabi, be the arbiters of its development by selecting outstanding local work for exhibition and engage with the community.
The gallery showcases paintings from local, regional and international artists both emerging and well known. Since being established in 2006 by two artists who are also entrepreneurs and art patrons, it has put together collections that have challenged the accepted artistic norms in the country and exposed local art lovers to a range of inspiring works. Photographs, paintings, collages, drawings, sculptures and digital art have formed the basis of the gallery’s permanent collection presented in Ghaf’s well lit contemporary exhibition space of 1,500 sq ft. In addition exhibitions by photo journalists, local artists and on calligraphy are held quite regularly. However Ghaf’s most popular event is the annual Ramadan Art Bazaar. The much publicised art event for 2013 was curated by a well known Emirati artist and showcased the work of 30 artists from regional and other countries. Exhibits included photographs, paintings, digital art and special handmade pieces. The beautifully presented event catered to a wide range of tastes and budgets. Ghaf Gallery also participates in the Abu Dhabi Arts Festival by providing a facility for an artist in residence. It is an ideal place to visit to get acquainted with the contemporary scene in Abu Dhabi. The location in a quiet part of the city allows for contemplation of its work undisturbed by the usual urban cacophony.
