Dambulla not located too far from Kandy is a popular tourist destination and it is also popular amongst locals who follow Buddhism.

Dambulla cave temple is a Buddhist temple which was created by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe and has had several renovations done over the years. Since Sri Lanka is a conservative country and this is a religious location, it is best to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees and preferably a light colour.

If you are staying at any of the Dambulla Hotels such as the elegantly-designed Aliya Resort & Spa the Dambulla Cave Temple is only a short drive away. It is located on the Kandy-Jaffna highway not too far from Dambulla town.
What to see
There are 9 different rock caves to explore. What is most astounding is the reclining Buddha Statue which is known to be one of the biggest on the island. You can also see the stunning statues and painting created in the Kandyan era.
What to do
When you visit each rock cave you can learn about certain times of Prince Siddhartha’s life or Lord Buddha’s life. There are descriptions of the drawings and the statues so you can learn about the significance of each of them.
