While the Great Wall of China gets most of the spotlight when it comes to ancient Chinese walls, not to be forgotten is the impressive Xi’an City Wall which you can explore on a bicycle!
Planning Your Visit
This ancient City Wall surrounds part of the city centre making it easy to reach especially when staying at hotels like Grand Park Xian which is located adjacent to it. From such properties, the South Gate (Yongning Gate), one of the wall’s four main gates, is within walking distance away and is the ideal place to begin your exploration.
Getting Started
Those staying at close by Xi’an hotels can get off to an early start and will find bike hire options at the four main gates; the good thing is, that you can return or rent from any of these sites on the wall. A popular route is to start from the South Gate and complete the full circle back there again; such a ride will take around two hours.
What to Expect
You can look forward to the unique experience of riding on a historical attraction that dates to the Ming Dynasty. Spanning a height of around 12 metres, this structure played a pivotal role in protecting the city and you will get to see the ramparts, parapets, crenellations, drawbridges and several towers; on your ride, you can enjoy a unique perspective of the city from this elevated vantage point too.
Keep in Mind
In summer, the sun and heat can be quite strong; with that in mind, during this season, look to cycle along the Xi’an City Wall before around 10:00am or after 5:00pm when it’s cooler. Wear a sunhat or cap and sunglasses, apply effective sunscreen and take some drinking water as well. Before you begin or once done, look to watch one of the cultural performances at the South Gate which will add to the experience.
