Sigiriya falls within the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka and areas in and around Sigiriya feature a range of cultural attractions. The main attraction here is the Lion’s Rock, an ancient rock fortress used as the official residence of King Kassapa during his reign from 477 – 495 AD. The rock fortress, during its days of glory, was one of the most amazing fortresses carved entirely in rock, which also featured an extensive sewage system, reservoirs, and gardens. The fortress also features some of the most beautiful frescoes, and even today visitors can view the wonders of the glorious history of the country, through this sight.
The next ideal stop, on one’s tour of Sigiriya, would be Pidurangala. Located off the road which leads to the Rock Fortress, Pidurangala is a small hillock which features an old monastery which has housed upto five hundred Buddhist monks during its years of glory. The history of this monastery can be traced as far back as the 5th century when it served as the main temple of King Kassapa during his reign. The rock caves at this monastery feature ancient rock carvings of Lord Buddha, and if one were to venture further up the hill, interesting Buddhist relics can be viewed.
