While Phuket is famed for its sublime sun-kissed beaches, it is also a destination where you can experience a fascinating local culture; here are some of the top spots to visit in this regard.
Phuket Old Town
This historical area was where the island’s tin mining boom was centred around during the 19th century and offers much to explore; on excursions here from beachside properties like Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas, one will come across Sino-Portuguese style shophouses, Buddhist temples and Chinese shrines. You can also look to visit the Thai Hua Museum and the Central Market for more cultural immersion in the Old Town.
The Big Buddha
Another key local attraction is the Big Buddha, an impressive statue at the summit of Nakkerd Hills which you should also look to visit from your Phuket luxury resort. When you arrive at the site, you will find a hall where one can find more on the history of the project; from there, proceed up a long staircase to where you can view this large statue layered in Burmese white jade marble and a smaller statue set amidst stunning vistas.
Wat Chalong
In the Chalong Bay area on the island, one will find a Buddhist temple known as Wat Chalong which is worth visiting too. At this historical attraction, one will find a grand pagoda and several key statues such as Poh Than Jao Wat as well as those of some of the temple’s former abbots. Other highlights include wall paintings which showcase aspects of the life story of Buddha and antique Thai furniture.
Jui Tui Shrine
A traditional Chinese temple, the Jui Tui Shrine dates to 1911 and is one of the oldest on the island. The main deity here is a Taoist god, Tean Hu Huan Soy, who is associated with dancers and artists; an image of this deity can be found at the principal altar while there are other statues at this sacred site as well. A focal point of the annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival, the shrine is also a place where people come to have their fortunes told.
