The Mekong is the 12th largest river in the world and flows through six countries in Southeast Asia. It is an all-year-round destination, but your experience can be distinctly different depending on what time of year you visit. Many cruises in Laos offer luxury experiences such as Mekong Kingdoms but whichever you choose and wherever you start, it is important to know what each time of year entails on a Luang Prabang cruise.
Dry Season
The Mekong’s dry season is from November to April. If you’re concerned about river flooding and rain, this would be the best time for you to visit. Your photographs will also be even more amazing as from December to February the flowers along the river are in full bloom!
Wet Season
The rainy and monsoon seasons fall within May to October and April to September respectively. During this time the flowers, vegetables and everything at floating markets will be fresh because everything is in full bloom from June to July. Also, all hotels will be less crowded and are likely to have offers and discounts since it is considered the offseason.
High and Low Water Seasons
These two seasons are unique to the Mekong and partially coincide with the Dry and Wet seasons. The high-water season falls in mid-August and November and the low water season falls between December and mid-August. You can do some research on rainfall, temperature and seasonal illnesses and risks during each time of year and pick the best time to go on an amazing cruise on the Mekong.
