During the Japanese invasion of Philippines in December 1941, Corregidor Island served as the Allied Philippine Headquarters. Even after the forces of the mainland fell, the brave men at Corregidor Island continued to fight off the oncoming Japanese for 27 gruelling days. This was a truly heroic deed since the Allied Forces were severely outnumbered and were cut off from food and ammunition supplies. However, due to lack of supplies the forces on the island were finally forced to surrender on the 6th of May 1942, thus ending their valiant stand against overwhelming odds.
Today the guns of this island fortress have fallen silent, and Corregidor Island serves as a tribute to the heroic deeds and sacrifices of the men who served on it. The buildings and structures which were ruined or partly destroyed due to the events of 1942 are still preserved, displaying the true horrors, destruction and futility of war. One can also witness the sheer size of the massive guns and battery’s that were used for the defence of Philippines, such the almighty Battery Way, the 12 inch Battery Hearn, and the large Battery Crockett.
Another landmark on Corregidor Island is the Malinta Tunnel, which was the headquarters of the Island and was at one point, the seat of the Commonwealth Government during the Japanese Invasion. This gigantic tunnel also had a 1000 bed hospital inside it, and a special night tour of the tunnels through the hospital re-creates the horror and suspense during the invasion. There are also several other landmarks such as the Pacific War Memorial, Filipino Heroes Memorial, Japanese Garden of Peace and the Corregidor Lighthouse. Corregidor Island truly stands as a symbol of the valour of the Allied Forces and is an attraction worth visiting.
