Cornwall Park is a reserve that boasts an illustrious past history. The whole of the reserve belonged to John Logan Campbell, but after the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall in 1901, not only did he gift the park to the people he also asked the public to name it after the royals. This honorary act paved the way for him to be knighted. But, about 120 hectares are still run as a farm even to this day, so you can many herds of sheep and cows grazing about the park.
A visit to Cornwall Park is not complete without a climb to the renowned One Tree Hill, which is a volcanic cone! But don’t worry this volcano has been sleeping for thousands of years. But it is the history of this tree that is so compelling. The name ‘One Tree Hill’ is derived from a tree that stood near the summit. But it is believed that this tree was cut down by a white settler, in an act of vandalism in 1852. Though, Sir John Campbell attempted to grow other trees numerous times, they all failed to survive.
Now today, if you climb on top of One Tree Hill, you will be able to see the grave of Sir John Cambell and a staggering 33 meter high obelisk bequeathed by the park’s former owner as a memorial to the Māori people. In front of the obelisk is a bronze statue of a Maori warrior standing proud.
Cornwall Park with its many attractions and beautiful landscapes is also the venue for many public events such as the Cornwall Park Summer Concert Series. A place to embrace the beauty of nature and relax in salubrious weather, Cornwall Park is a modern Garden of Eden.
