Chiang Rai is a hidden gem waiting to be explored, nestled along the borders of Northern Thailand. Full of beautiful temples, vibrant markets, and incredible landscapes, the city offers a perfect mix of nature and cultural heritage. Chiang Rai offers something for everyone, and here are the best things to do in the famed city.
Visit Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple)
Starting off with arguably the most popular attraction in Chiang Rai, get ready to be completely spellbound by the architectural elegance of the White Temple. This modern temple is a sparkling structure with the most intricate designs adorning it. Designed by Thai architect Chalermchai Kositpipat, the temple infuses a blend of traditional Buddhist art and modern elements, most famously a painting of Keanu Reeves’ character from the classic “The Matrix”.
Explore the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar
One of the best places to try out famous Thai street food, you can find several stalls selling a wide variety of dishes for your enjoyment. The unique flavour of Khao Soi, a curry-flavoured noodle dish, can’t be found anywhere else and is a popular treat found in the bazaar. The bazaar is also relatively quiet compared to most markets and is the perfect place to purchase souvenirs from.
The Clock Tower Light Show
The familiarity of the architecture of the clock tower should not come as a surprise, as it was designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat, the artist who was responsible for the White Temple. When the sun sets, the tower becomes quite the spectacle, as the colours change to the beats of the music playing. It’s a fun experience both locals and visitors enjoy and is highly recommended.
The Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle is a region located at the confluence of the Ruak River and the Mekong River, where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar (Burma) meet. It’s a historically significant area that was once known for its opium trade. Exploring this area is one of the most fun activities in Chiang Rai, with temples, Buddhist statues, and even an Opium Museum available in the area. The region is welcoming of tourists, as seen by the existence of several resorts such as Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort, and makes for a great time.
