The quaint coastal town of Pasikudah is located on the northeastern side of Sri Lanka and is known for its stunning stretch of beach with inviting waters which is also one of the longest coastlines in the world. Despite the devastation from the 2004 tsunami, the town has continued to thrive and now carries a unique cultural and coastal charm with plenty of sites and attractions to explore.

Kallady Beach
This is a popular stretch of beach in the area located just an hour’s drive from nearby hotels in Pasikudah such as the Amethyst Resort. It has plenty of casuarina groves and several shady places for setting up picnics and hammocks. Naturally, it is frequented by families on weekends and is popular among marine enthusiasts looking to dive and swim.
Bridge Market
If you want to enjoy some local snacks like kithul treacle and curd, the Bridge Market has everything you need. Apart from having some of the best local goodies, the market also serves as a community initiative that allows for locally sourced vegetables, fruits, honey, and even wooden carvings and heirlooms to be sold.
Batticaloa Dutch Fort
Built in 1628 this historic fort has been under the rule of the Portuguese, Dutch and British thus serving as a hallmark of the country’s colonial past. The fortress has four large bastions and old cannons with the Batticaloa lagoon on both sides.
Kokkadicholai Thanthondreeswarar Temple
This is the most significant Shaivism Kovil in Batticaloa and is among the oldest shrines in the region. The temple features a colourful facade, pastel pillars and several detailed carvings of Lord Shiva. The temple is visited by pilgrims in the thousands, usually during the mid-August chariot festival.
