Australia’s coastline is world famous for its picturesque landscapes, clear sunny skies and brilliant surf beaches that attracts thousands of visitors every year; and not far from the city center of Wollongong is another magnificent location to check out, Coalcliff’s Tidal Rock Pools. Surrounded by large rocks and spectacular coal cliffs, these wonderful, secluded tidal rock pools are perfect if you’re someone who wants to take a safe and relaxing dip in the sea, minus the hazards of surf breaks and strong undertows.
The tidal pools are located along Wollongong’s beautiful coastline, the seaside city lies 82 km south of Sydney, on a narrow coastal strip between several highly regarded surf beaches and the mountainous forest range of the Illawarra escarpment. If you plan on staying in the area, there are plenty of good accommodation Wollongong offers, from small hotels to designer houses located along the coast like the Emerald + Aqua holiday homes.
Anyone who visits the charming pools would be easily fooled into thinking these were natural tidal pools, however, they were actually formed back in the 1950’s near the coalcliff colliery when land began sinking into the rock platform and eventually collapsing into the sea below. The rock pools then became a 5 year long public projected headed by the manager of the coalcliff colliery, to create a safe and enjoyable area for the community to delight in.
The rock pools maintain a temperature of around 16 degrees, even in winter; and the surrounding areas have been developed to include a children’s pool and fresh water showers. Today, the tidal rock pools play an integral role in the community, offering both locals and visitors a unique and secluded location near the sea for safe swimming and relaxation against a backdrop of the natural beauty of the east coast.
