The culturally rich town of Galle in Sri Lanka offers many attractions for the visitor, including sightseeing highlights. The Galle Fort, originally a stronghold of the Dutch during their reign in Sri Lanka is now somewhat a quaint town, with its rustic nature and cobbled streets. Most of the buildings in the area are centuries old, yet well maintained and habitable even today. If you, by any chance, need to do a little research about Sri Lanka’s colonial legacy, you should visit nowhere but Galle. The city is full of colonial sites with the influence derived from the Portuguese, Dutch and British invasions from time to time.
The Galle Fort is perfect for a stroll along the beach, and maybe even a morning swim. Visit this historic city and enjoy a relaxing holiday at a villa in Sri Lanka such as the Pebbles Beach Villa. Travellers staying at this famous city could also consider travelling to the spectacular beaches nearby such as Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa.
Located at the southernmost end of the Fort which once was a Portuguese bastion, Flag Rock is one of the most popular places to catch the sunset and most probably the only place in Sri Lanka where you would find cliff divers. Cliff jumping is popular among the adrenaline junkies who push their fears aside to test their limits. It is known as the least complicated extreme sport since there’s no special clothing to wear, no service provider and no equipment to buy; just the body soaring up in the air and plunging into the water below. Watching cliff divers’ jump off the ramparts into the ocean is quite thrilling, but these fit young men earn their living by diving into the ocean for tourists, which costs around $10 per jump.
